DeKalb County Fire Department Citizens Fire Academy

Ever wondered what it’s like to be a firefighter? Now is your chance to find out!

The DeKalb County Fire Department’s Citizens Fire Academy is a free, interactive program designed to give members of our community a behind-the-scenes look at the fire service. Over a six-week period, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and rewards of being a firefighter.

Program Details:

The next academy session will begin Spring 2026, and will run for six consecutive Tuesdays, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Who Can Apply?

The Citizens Fire Academy is open to all DeKalb County residents aged 18 and over, or anyone who works in DeKalb County. This unique program is an opportunity for you to learn more about the dedication of your local firefighters and the critical services they provide.

What to Expect:

Our comprehensive curriculum covers a wide range of topics and provides hands-on experience. Activities and topics include:

  • History of the DeKalb County Fire Department: Learn about our department’s origins and its evolution over the years.
  • Organizational Structure: Discover how the DCFD is organized and operates to serve the community effectively.
  • Air Medical Helicopter Tour: Get an up-close look at the vital role of air medical services in emergency response.
  • Ride-Along in a Fire Engine: Experience what it’s like to ride in one of our front-line fire engines.
  • Vehicle Extrication Experience: Understand the complex process of using specialized tools to rescue trapped individuals from vehicles.
  • Tour of the DeKalb County E-911 Center: See how emergency calls are received and dispatched, serving as the central nervous system for all emergency services in the county.
  • Try on Turnout Gear: Feel the weight and see the features of the personal protective equipment firefighters wear.
  • Use a Fire Extinguisher: Learn proper techniques for using a fire extinguisher to combat small fires safely.
  • Water Supply Operations: Witness how firefighters establish a consistent and powerful water supply at an emergency scene.
  • Operate Hose Lines: Get hands-on experience by operating a fire hose and feeling its power.
